August news

From Regional Director Floyd Wilson:

July 26, 2000

Greetings:

I hope that all of you are enjoying the Summer and getting a lot
of good training in.

The following clubs have not scheduled a trial for the year 2000.
(1) Bi-City SchH. Club, Stewart Harvard
(2) German Shepherd Working Dog Alliance, Mike Holbrook
(3) SchH. Club of Lee County, David Frye.

In the event that the listed do not have a trial, and providing they pay
their dues to U.S.A., the clubs will be placed in affiliation
status. If any of the three clubs do not pay
their U.S.A. dues, they will be dropped from the rolls.

We have three forming (new) clubs in the Southeast Region:
Already approved for affiliation are
South Metro, Atlanta SchH. Club and Jacksonville (N.C.) SchH. Club.
Pending: Triangle SchH. Club (N.C.)

Just doing their trials will keep me busy.

Very important: All clubs should send  membership lists,
dues, delegate letters to Kelly ASAP.

You will find a note from our secretary that addresses this
problem.

The following clubs should send their $25 Regional Director
fee. This is only a token that helps to defray necessary expenses and you are still a part of our Southeast Region:

Stewart Harvard, Bi-City SchH. Club; Wayne Simanovich, Catawba Valley
SchH. Club; A. Carl Brown, Fayetteville SchH. Club; Mike Holbrook, German Shepherd Working Dog Alliance; Joe Laney, Great Smoky Mountain SchH. Club; Gottfried Dildei, High Drive SchH. Club; John Piurkowsky, Low County SchH. Club; David Frye, SchH. Club of Lee County; Hank Jones, Tenn. Valley SchH Club.

New clubs need to send their $25 soon as they are approved. Jacksonville has already paid. For the clubs that paid promptly, thank you for your support.

Last year the Southeastern Region only had one trial in September for
people to qualify. For all of you who want to qualify for the Nationals, we invite you to enter our trial Sept. 16-17, 2000 at O.G. Volmarstein.

Again, thanks for all of your support. Good training, enjoy your
summer, dog, family and life.

 USA seeks name change
UNITED SCHUTZHUND CLUBS OF AMERICA  is in the process of CHANGING  ITS NAME. The organization's officials want to retain the USA initials but eliminate the word "schutzhund."   Plans also are to change the bylaws to reflect the elimination of the word.

Can you help think of a replacement name?  The request comes from USA President Mike Hamilton.  I am inquiring about the purpose of the proposed change.

The Chattahoochee Schutzhund Club has set a club trial for Nov. 11  with Mike West. The new trial information can be found on the events page on this Web site.

To: All Southeast Region Clubs
From: Floyd Wilson, Southeast Regional Director
Date: May 29, 2000
Subject: Information

Greetings on this Memorial Day. I hope all of you are having good training sessions and are enjoying the beginning of summer.

The following clubs have had their required trial for 2000: Palmetto, Brandon Verein, High Drive, Chattahoochee, O.G. Volmarstein, Raleigh, Seminole, Great Smoky Mountain, Catawba Valley.

The following clubs have their trial scheduled: Jefferson County, Mountain Empire, Asheville, Fayetteville, Central Alabama, Greater Atlanta, Greater Orlando, Pensacola, Low Country, Carolina.

The following clubs have not scheduled a trial for year 2000: Bi-City, German Shepherd Dog Working Alliance, Schutzhund Club of Lee County, Tennessee Valley SchH Club.

Clubs that do not have a trial will be placed in affiliation status. If you are having trouble getting a judge, try contacting Stephanie Dunion for a possible SV judge. More often than not, that seems to work. Some clubs seem never to have trouble getting a judge while others are always struggling for a judge.

To all clubs that supported the Regional Championship, either through an entry, sending an entry fee, and the trophy fund, a big thank you.

Jefferson County will have the championship in 2001.

I would like to thank the following clubs for sending their $25 Regional Director fee: Jefferson County, Raleigh, Carolina, Seminole, Palmetto, Mountain Empire, Greater Atlanta, Brandon Verein, Asheville, O.G. Volmarstein, Greater Orlando, Central Alabama.

The following clubs have sent nothing: Bi-City, Catawba Valley, Chattahoochee, Fayetteville, German Shepherd Working Dog Alliance, High Drive, Low Country, Pensacola, SchH Club of Lee County, Great Smoky Mountain, Tennessee Valley.

To the clubs that have carried their responsibility well, thank you.  For the remainder, you should shoulder your responsibility.

On the national level, it appears USA is slowly getting back on its feet. This has taken a lot of work.

On the regional level, all appears to be going well.  I am working with three clubs trying to gain full membership.

Current schedule of trials in the Southeastern Region:

June 10, Jefferson County
June 24-25, Mountain Empire
July 1, Asheville
Sept. 16-17, O.G. Volmarstein
Sept. 23-24, Fayetteville
Oct. 7-8, Raleigh
Oct. 20-21, NATIONALS
Nov. 4-5, Central Alabama
Dec. 2-3, Greater Orlando, Greater Atlanta, Pensacola
Dec. 9, Low Country

You may refer to the current USA Magazine or the Southeast Region Web site (http://pw1.netcom.com/~endfeld/seregion.htm) for the contact person and further information. The Web site also publishes trial fliers and entry forms as they are received from the clubs.

The Southeast Region will host the USA Nationals 2002.  NOW is the time to make your plans if you want to host this event.

I wish all of you continued success, and if I can help in any way, please call.

Your friend in the sport,

Floyd Wilson

SV Judge to take up
winter residence in Florida

SV Judge Dieter Dust has written  Regional Director Floyd Wilson that he plans to winter annually  in Florida and will be available at least half of each year to judge in the Southeast.

I'm an active dog handler and SV Judge and member of the United Schutzhund Club of America.

Being 53 years old I made a decision to spend at least half of the year in Florida.

I have a house in Jupiter/Palm Beach County and will be there from early December through mid March every year.

If you need a judge in your region I will be happy to help out. Travel expenses will be charged only from Jupiter.

My experience as a dog  handler:

  • 9 times participant in the SV-BSP ('92 second place)
  • 6 times LG-Champion and started in 19 LGA trials in different regions.
  • 5 times LG-FH Champion
  • My phone number in Jupiter is 561 746 8619.
    My phone number in Stein Nuemberg/Bavaria North is 011 49 9127 578647

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Best Regards,
    Dieter Dust

Regional Director Floyd Wilson notes that clubs wishing to take advantage of this offer must follow the normal procedure for SV foreign judges, working with Stephanie Dunion on scheduling and arrangements.

    Regional Director's update
    March, 2000

    To: All Southeast Region members

First of all, I would like to thank the Chattahoochee Schutzhund Club for hosting and conducting the Regional Championship.  Chattahoochee did a super job.  I, myself, enjoyed every minute of it.

I would also like to thank all of the participants who took the time to show their dogs. For those who missed this trial, you missed a good one.  Probably one of the best we have had in a long time.

    Roll Call

    Clubs present with a representative:

Catawba, Central Alabama, Chattahoochee, Greater Atlanta, Jefferson County, Mountain Empire, O.G. Volmarstein, Palmetto, Pensacola, Seminole, Tennessee Valley.
Clubs that sent an entry fee or entered a dog:
Central Alabama, Chattahoochee, Greater Atlanta, Jefferson County, Low Country, Mountain Empire, O.G. Volmarstein, Palmetto, Pensacola, Raleigh, Schutzhund Club of Lee County, Seminole, Tennessee Valley.
Clubs that did not send an entry fee:
Asheville, Bi-City, Brandon Verein, Carolina Schutzhund Club, Catawba, Fayetteville, German Shepherd Working Dog Alliance (Alpharetta), Greater Orlando, Great Smoky Mountain SchH. Club, High Drive SchH Klub.
Several clubs and patrons made trophy donations.  Jefferson County paid their trophy fee to the Regional Director.

Our bylaws say clubs should send the host club an entry or an entry fee. Furthermore, the bylaws say each club should send to the host club $1 per member for the trophy fund.  Only one club -- Jefferson County -- paid their fee for trophies.

The bylaws also say each club should send the Regional Director $25 annually to help defray the cost of postage, telephone calls.  Only one club has sent their Regional Director fee, that being again Jefferson County.

I know things are tight for some clubs.  You should take care of your obligations.

A short summary of the meeting

Greetings were given to the participants.  Members of the Chattahoochee Club were recognized and thanked.  The current FH Champion and World participants were recognized.  Further recognition was given to Gary Hanrahan for his contribution to the World Team.  We also recognized our sponsor, Best  Breed Working Dog Diet.  Other guests were recognized, and honor was given to our judge for the event, Dr. George Shumaker.

According to our bylaws, we did not have enough members to conduct an official meeting (11 clubs present, 12 absent, we needed 12). A short history was given of the Wilmington meeting that created much grief in the region. As a consequence we were forced to have our Regional Championship connected with the North American.

We are now back on track, and we should stay there.  To avoid another Wilmington, it was noted that for the most part the same clubs and people are absent; furthermore, the same people who continually support the region are present.  So in order to make this an official meeting, a motion was called for to waive the quorum rule for this meeting only.  The vote was unanimously yes.  We now had an official meeting.

Old business was discussed first.  Regional championship, where are we going? Question: Is the February date working?  The bylaws state that the date should be early spring or late winter. We have discussed this situation over and over with no result.  A recommendation is to keep the championship in the central part of the region with a hard look at the dates.  All persons interested in the region should join in the debate.

At present, we have 23 clubs in the region with paperwork on two more, which gives us 25 clubs.  We are the largest region in USA.

We have some clubs barely functioning, some are moderate, some are going great guns.

The following clubs have met their one trial for 2000: Palmetto, Brandon Verein, High Drive, Chattahoochee, O.G. Volmarstein, Raleigh, Seminole.

The following have trials pending: Great Smoky Mountain, Catawba, Palmetto, Mountain Empire, O.G. Volmarstein, Fayetteville, Raleigh, Central Alabama, Greater Atlanta, Pensacola.

The following clubs have not scheduled a trial: Asheville, Bi-City, Carolina SchH Club, German Shepherd Dog Working Alliance (Alpharetta), Greater Orlando, Jefferson County, Low Country, Schutzhund Club of Lee County, Tennessee Valley.  You may find judges hard to get.  May I suggest that you contact Mark Przybylski regarding the available USA judges, or Stephanie Dunion. Vic Wilms would like to judge in November. Furthermore you may want to contact the Regional Director for direction.

United Schutzhund Clubs of America: Much work has been done with much more to be done.  It appears that everytime a door is opened  something falls out. Our officers have contributed much to our organization. Give them a call and say 'thanks.' Changes and more changes are coming.

    New Business

I would like to thank Judy Johnson for developing our Web site. We may have a sponsor, which could generate income for the region.

Folks, I need help.  We need re-organization, to include a secretary, treasurer, plus people with ideas on how to improve and make this region the very best.

According to our bylaws only clubs that made an entry or sent an entry fee were eligible to vote on the host club for 2001.  The region favored Jefferson County Schutzhund Association for next year's championship.

Finally, the Regional Director thanked the group for their continued support and the meeting was adjourned.

    Current trial schedule for 2000:

    March 17-19, Sieger Show
March 31-April 2, German Shepherd Championship
April 8-9, Great Smoky Mountain SchH Club, Judge Mark Przbylski
                    Catawba Valley, Judge George Shumaker
    April 27-30, North American
    May 6, Asheville, cancelled
May 13, Palmetto, Judge George Shumaker
June 24-25, Mountain Empire, Judge Floyd Wilson
Sept. 16-17, O.G. Volmarstein, Judge Al Govednik
Sept. 23-24 Fayetteville, Judge Bill Fields
Oct. 7-8, Raleigh, Judge Carla Griffith
    Oct. 20-21, Nationals
Nov. 4-5, Central Alabama, Judge SV Vic Wilms
Dec. 1-3, Greater Atlanta, Judge Al Milner
    Dec. 1-3, AWDF FH Championship
Dec. 2-3, Pensacola, Judge Mike West

For those who have not scheduled your trial for 2000, you need to do so.

Finally, you should send your regional director $25 ASAP, and $1 per member to Chattahoochee for their trophy fund, plus an entry fee if you did not send one.

Again I thank all of you for your continued success.

    Floyd Wilson, Regional Director

    December News Notes

Sieger Show performance evaluation standards update

USA Director of Judges Mark F. Przybylski has notified all USA full-member clubs of the criteria by which the performance phase at the USA Sieger Show will be evaluated starting with the Virginia 2000 Sieger Show.

The new standards have the unanimous backing of the USA Breed Advisory Committee and a majority of USA judges, Przybylski says.  The criteria are to be sent out to the member clubs immediately so that they can prepare properly for the Sieger show.

"As I am sure most of you know, Germany is already starting to implement these changes, some of which I proposed over a year ago," Przybylski says. "I believe we need to take the lead to make sure we set the standard and also strive to raise it."

Here are the new evaluation criteria:

    • The dog  has three (3) tries to perform the free-heeling exercise to the attack on handler and must reach a predetermined distance from the blind (20 feet) to pass. The actual attack will commence when the dog is between 10 and 15 feet from the blind. The distance from the starting point of heeling to the blind will be 60 feet. The dog that does not perform this within three attempts will be disqualified.
    • The dog that does not out will be disqualified.
    • Dogs that continue to bump or re-grip after the out will be evaluated the same as dogs in a local club trial, which would ensure that they not finish higher than a dog that is correct in its work.
    • The gripwork will be evaluated by the judge as it is described in our rulebook: "The dog should counter the attack securely and energetically in stopping the attack by the helper."    The dog that does not perform in this manner but still performs the grip exercises must be placed at the end of whatever conformation rating the dog would achieve. A lack of self-confidence in the gripwork shall be evaluated as sufficient (vorhanden) in courage.
    • The "out" should show the dog clearly off the sleeve and in the guarding phase. The only command permitted is one word for the out such as "out," "aus," or any other single command of out.  The commands  of "sit" or "down" to effect the out are not permitted here. The dog, however, may sit, down or stand upon the out command, but may not bother thehelper. The sit or down may be reinforcedat a distance of 10 (ten) feet, if necessary,as the handler approaches the dog.
    • The handler should, after the attack, leash the dog without physical restraint (such as grabbing the dog to prevent a re-grip). The dog may receive an extra command to out to put the leash on the dog with no penalty; however, the dog that must be physically restrained or taken off of the sleeve physically will be disqualified. Once the dog is secured on lead, this exercise is over.
    • On the pursuit or the long grip, the handler may encourage the dog while holding the dog by the collar at the basic position to initiate the release as the helper proceeds to the middle of the field to start the exercise. The handler will release the dog upon a signal from the judge. The gripwork and the out will be evaluated the same as in the attack on handler.
    • All dogs entered in the performance phase will work on 2 (two) helpers, one for the attack on handler and one for the pursuit or courage test.
    • These criteria will be in effect at the 2000 Sieger Show in Virginia.
