Notes from Assistant Regional Director Vicki Keller Latest update Oct. 16, 2001
  • Butch England has resigned as Regional Breed warden.  Martin Gnyp is the new Regional Breed Warden.  His phone is 910 602 6558.  I do not have an email address for him.
  • Please let me know if you plan to be at the Nationals.  I am trying  to get a delegate count.
  • Remember the Regional Conformation Championship in Alabama on Nov 16-18. It will be a great time to get schutzhund titles, AD, youth ratings and breed surveys.
Earlier  notes:
  • If your club plans to send a delegate to the annual meeting, please send in your delegate letter to the USA office.  The form  (click here to go straight to it - it is slow to load - you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is a free download) is on the USA website under official forms.

  •

  •  We are asking members to send photos of southeast region members and their dogs for use in a video production that will be shown at the SE regional competition in February.
    • The regionals are being hosted by Palmetto State Schutzhund Club.

These photos should include the club member's name and the dog's information.  We would like as many photos of our members as possible.  Action shots are most welcome.  But please send any photos that you like.  Your original photos can be picked up at the regionals.

This is a great way for your club members to be recognized.  Please send to Vicki Keller,  830 Bluff Drive, Knoxville TN. 37919  The deadline is Dec. 1, 2001.

    •  Club contact people should send their email address to be included on our regional list.  I will try and get the USA office to include that information on the Web site list.
    •  A couple of rule changes  are in effect or are going into effect:
        • The titles of Tracking 1,2,3 and Obedience 1,2,3 are now available.
        • There is a 10-second wait before the recall command can be given.

Notes from the USA Executive Board Meeting
    Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001
By Vicki Keller, Assistant Regional Director

    Points from Committee reports:

    • Our current membership is about 4,700, a slight increase  from  last year
    • The budget is due in 45 days so there is no financial news to report.
    • The magazine will not be printing all forms every month in an effort to reduce cost. All forms  should be included on our Web site, and they are always on the USA web site.
    • A new helper book is being developed but the old ones will still be used.
    • Karen McIntyre was approved as a conformation judge.
    • The nominating committee reports that the following committees need members to be elected  at the November General Board meeting:
        • National Events committee 4 new members
        • Judges committee 2 new members
        • Nominating committee 5 new members
    • The USA Web site needs volunteers willing to type archive material into the Web site.
    • The Web site also is seeking  photos of German  Shepherd Dogs  running,  playing,  etc.,  so the general appearance of the site will be understandable to the general public.
    • The World Championship committee reports that the WUSV will be held in Slovinia.  Dave Puzzo will provide information in coming months about travel arrangements and other logistical information.
    • In 2002,  the WUSV will be in Austria and will be a four-day event.

    NEW BUSINESS:

    • USA will now accept WDA scorebooks. The understanding is if a dog has, for example,  a SchH 2 from a WDA judge, that dog may  be shown under a USA judge for a SchH 3. This was approved by the executive board.
    • Members are urged to contact the airlines regarding our need to continue to be able to ship dogs. United Air Lines and many other domestic airlines  no longer will accept dogs. Delta will ship dogs  at only certain times of year.  Lufthansa and other international airlines still will ship dogs with certain restrictions. More information will be posted  later  on the USA Web site.
    • Foreign judges are to continue to be scheduled in the usual  manner.
    • Important --  All clubs should pay special attention to trial paperwork sent to the USA office. The information about the dogs and handlers often is  unreadable. Club trial secretaries should be trained in how to complete the paperwork. Problems can cause  dogs' titles to  be held up. Also, a flyer must be sent to the regional director and to USA 21 days before the trial. It can be sent by e-mail.
    • No one is exempt from the scorebook bond rule. The USA office must have your bond if your scorebook is not in order.

Southeastern Region News  Feb. 26, 2001

Our region must have a breed warden and a tattooer elected by the end of 2001. We are seeking nominations.

Regional directors must ensure that local clubs train members in all phases of schutzhund.  Clubs that train protection only are not in compliance with USA regulations. Clubs must offer obedience and tracking training to its members.  Bylaws for all local clubs must be reviewed by the regional director.

Effective June 2001, local clubs shall send $4 per dog to the USA office for trial fee,  and
if you host a national event,  $6 per dog must be sent to USA.  Formerly, the fee was $2 per dog. Clubs should  raise their entry fees accordingly.

Some  new titles are in the works. Soon there will be separate competition levels for OBEDIENCE 1,2,3 and TRACKING 1,2,3.  Information on these new titles will be forthcoming soon from the judges committee.

    Regional Breed Warden nominations sought

The Southeast Region is accepting nominations for the position of breed warden.
This person  should have good communication skills, be knowledgeable of the breed  standard, and be willing to train local breed wardens.  The regional breed warden  will collect regional statistics and report to the national committee and the Breed Advisory Committee.  The regional breed warden will attend the  national committee and will  hear grievances and problems of local breeders and try to correct problems.

The regional breed warden will keep records of breeding activity and will make recommendations to the Breed Advisory Committee,  and  act as local breed warden if needed.

Please send your resume or qualifications to Floyd Wilson.

    Club breed wardens/tattooers

A  tattooer and a  local breed warden should be present in each local club.  Please send the name of the individual responsible for these positions in your local club to Floyd Wilson.

Please send your nomination for regional breed warden and the name and address of your local breed warden and tattooer by March 31.  After we have nominations, we will post them on the Web site. We will  send  mail ballots and post them on the web site by April 15.

Thank you so much for your kind attention to this important position.

Greetings to the Southeast Region 2001

2000 was a great year in the Southeast Region. I hope that all of you  are looking
forward to 2001 being even greater. We should all be proud of the World
Team, especially since over half of the team was from our region. The purpose of this
message is to give you an overview of the 2001 trial schedule (since most of you have
    already scheduled your trials).

To bring you up to date, all three affiliated clubs should gain full membership. I have
already judged the South Metro Club, which will complete the cycle. Personally, I want
to thank Barry Drangle, apprentice judge, who helped me complete the task. The most
recent additions to clubs in our Region are: Triangle SchH Club, South Metro Atlanta
SchH Club, and Jacksonville (NC) SchH Club. You will find all three listed in the
    magazine for further information.

Unfortunately, some clubs gave up the sport. They are: Bi-City SchH Club, German
Shepherd Working Dog Alliance, Jacksonville, Florida
(affiliation SchH Club. The following club will be moved to affiliation status due to not
having a trial:  Low County SchH Club. Currently we have 22 full member clubs and
    one affiliated club.

If you have not scheduled your trial for 2001 now is a good time to do so.
All clubs including the new clubs need to be reminded of the rules that we follow in the
    Southeast Region.

    Southeast Region Championship.
    (1) Each club is to send an entry or $50 to Jefferson County
        a. In order to vote on next years 2002 Championship you are
            required to do this.
    (2) You can make a title at this trial.
    (3) Each club is to send Jefferson County $1 per member of your club for the
    trophy fund.

To provide for the minimum expense of the Regional Director, each club is to send a
check for $25 to the Regional Director. This  barely affords a break-even situation.
Thank you in advance for your prompt reply.

By now all of you know about Kathy Early, who had just shown two dogs
to help the South Metro, Atlanta gain full membership in USA.  To say the least
we are all sorry about Kathy's sudden death.

Anyone wishing to run for Regional Director  and Assistant Regional Director, or
any club wishing to host the Nationals should let me know.  The annual meeting will be
    held Feb. 10.

On a more personal note, I want to thank all of you for extending your best wishes with
my recent illness. All of my tests are negative and I am in the recovery phase. Thanks a
million. I have also been invited to Australia around June or July to conduct a tracking
seminar and judge a trial for the Brisbane Sporting Dog Club.

Ihope that all of you will attend our Regional Trial and  meeting.

You are urged to get your entry in ASAP.  I intend to run again for Region Director
    and solicit your vote.

    See you at the Regionals.

    Floyd Wilson, Regional Director

The OG Volmarstein Club will host a trial Feb. 24-25 with S.V. Judge Hans G. Voss, who has more than 50  years of experience with the German shepherd. This is Herr
Voss' final year  of judging. Join us and gain from his experience.
