DNA test available for long-hair coat trait in GSDs

Subject: German Shepherd Dog DNA Test

DDC Veterinary in Fairfield, Ohio is now offering DNA Testing for
coat-length among German Shepherd Dogs.

Long-haired coat length is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait,
therefore dogs that are carriers of the long hair mutation will appear
to be normal (short hair) themselves but will likely pass on the
long-hair mutation 50% of the time.

The purpose of this new test is to accurately identify coat-length
genotypes. Breeders can use DNA testing as a tool to more effectively
manage mating patterns and make better selection decisions.

There are 3 possible genotypes for coat length:

1) N/N Clear (those having 2 copies of the normal short-hair allele [N]
and appear to be short-haired)

2) N/F Carrier (those having 1 copy of the normal short-hair allele [N]
and 1 copy of the long-hair mutation [F] and appear to be short-haired)

3) F/F Affected (those having 2 copies of the long-hair mutation [F]
and appear to be long-haired)

Some highlights regarding this new test:

* DNA samples can be collected easily at home using buccal (cheek)

swabs provided as part of a free DNA sample collection kit.

* Dogs can be DNA tested at ANY age.

* The cost for testing is $58 (US) per canine with a $10 discount
per
test for 5 or more submitted at the same time. Payment can be submitted
with the return samples.

* A detailed DNA report will be mailed within 10 business days of
receipt of the samples. Results can also be emailed to avoid any
potential delays with regular mail service.

For questions, or to order sample collection kits, please call us at

1-31-06 Imported Breeding Stock DNA Requirement

Effective for imported dogs registered on or after March 1, 2006, any imported dog registered with the AKC must have an AKC DNA profile prior to registering its first litter whelped in the United States. This requirement does not affect foreign dogs registered with the AKC before March 1, 2006. This requirement applies to both
males and females and will be used to verify future generations produced by these dogs.
What breeders/owners need to do if they own a sire or dam that is subject to the requirement:

1. Obtain a DNA test kit.

2. Send the DNA cheek swab sample, the required paperwork and payment to the AKC in the envelope provided in the DNA test kit. To eliminate delays in processing litter applications, the completed test kits should be submitted in advance of the litter application.

Breeders/owners fulfill the requirement when the DNA test kit arrives at DNA Operations in Raleigh and is logged into the Database, even though an additional six to eight weeks are required to obtain the actual DNA profile. The parentage verification policies of all current DNA programs will be applied to this requirement, as will the discipline policies of the Compliance Audit Program.

Subject: E-Ballot #2-06 (National Event Slate of Judges)

Motion: By Mark Przybylski, seconded by Bill Plumb, that two USA judges be utilized for USA national events whenever possible; with the option of using one recognized non-USA judge in one of the three phases, and the non-USA judge rotated through the phases on a regular basis. Beginning in 2007, the USA Judges Committee will provide a possible slate of authorized USA judges for all USA national events by January 31 of the event year.

Background: It has become glaringly apparent over the past few years that the only judges we see in the stadium at our national events are SV judges, with the occasional Canadian SV judge thrown in for variety. Since 2001, there have only been two USA judges in the stadium for the obedience and protection phases. That could be construed as an insult to our fully-licensed USA judges, of which many are more than qualified for the major events; and it certainly casts a cloud over all of the work they do every year officiating at the various local club trials. We need to utilize our USA judges as the ones who pick our World Team every year, exactly the same as Germany does. After all, we do not judge at their Bundessieger in any phase; not even the SV-licensed USA judges we had in our organization were ever afforded this honor. Therefore, our USA judges need to be more of a factor as well as a mainstay at our major events.
